Hearts’ redevelopment plans are put on hold for a yearMARTIN McMILLAN June 23 2006 HEARTS' plans to redevelop Tynecastle stadium have been dealt a blow with the news that an area of land adjacent to the ground is not for sale for at least a further year. Vladimir Romanov, the club owner, was willing to spend a reported £1.8m on the site behind the main stand on which a nursery is located as he looks to build a new state-of-the-art enclosure to increase the stadium capacity. However, parents of children attending the nursery raised concerns over the relocation and Edinburgh City Council have decided to postpone further consultation until next summer. Hearts, who said they would rehouse the nursery on a temporary site behind the Wheatfield Road stand, were hoping to gain control of the land in August. In a letter to parents, Roy Jobson, director of children and families at the council, said: "During the consultation, it became clear that it would be impossible to move the nursery school by August 2006 and in my final report I will be recommending that any proposed move should be delayed until summer 2007 at the earliest." Councillor Rev. Ewan Aitken, executive member for children and families, added: "During the consultation period it became clear that both parents and staff had real concerns about the proposed timescales and we have decided to postpone any possible move for the nursery until next summer." Romanov is keen to capitalise on the club's new-found popularity by building a stand to increase the capacity to around 25,000. The multi-millionaire also wants to build a hotel and conference centre on the Gorgie site with the nursery land essential to his plans. Hearts have been informed of the council's intention. A club spokesperson said: "We are more than happy to support the children, parents and staff of Tynecastle Nursery School in order that any move would suit their timescales. "We know how important the nursery is and whatever agreement is reached it will be done with the interests of the nursery and local community." |
