SPL to confirm Setanta schedulesMARTIN McMILLAN Scotland's armchair fans will be able to pick and mix their television football viewing next season – with a choice of Friday night, Sunday afternoon and Monday evening fixtures. Setanta's £54.5m deal with the Bank of Scotland Premierleague includes an extra 22 live matches, on top of the 38 currently shown, in the forthcoming campaign. And it is understood the SPL are set to confirm this week that the extra games will be broadcast on a Friday and Monday as they prepare to announce their fixture list for the new season. The switch away from traditional Saturday afternoons and Sundays, to Fridays and Mondays is a compromise between the clubs, the broadcasters and the police. The clubs were in favour of the extra live games been shown solely on a Friday but police in Edinburgh ruled against this switch. The Monday evening games were a stipulation of Setanta as they build up to taking over that slot from Sky Sports in 2007-2008 after they won the right to broadcast 46 English Premiership games a season in a £350m deal. The bulk of Setanta's original 38 game package will still be shown on a Sunday afternoon with the vast majority of them away fixtures involving Celtic and Rangers. But the games on Fridays and Mondays are expected to mainly involve Hearts and Hibs. |
