GRETNA SKIPPER: MY WIFE SAYS SHE'LL BIN HORROR VID

SCOTTISH CUP FINAL POSTSCRIPT
By John Gardner

CHRIS INNES admits he watched his Cup Final miss so often his wife threatened to bin the video.

Gretna's skipper blew a last-gasp chance to write his name in history when he steered a volley wide of the far post.

And last night Innes, who was magnificent at the heart of the defence, said: "It will go through my head all summer.

"If I could turn the clock back I would maybe have taken a touch. I've watched it so often, my wife has threatened to throw the video out.

"It's only natural to think of that chance, you nit-pick the wee things and I'm my harshest critic but maybe I could have done better.

"However, I'm not going to cut myself up over it. I was there to do ajob and I did it."

Innes admits he was touched by the sight of Gretna owner Brooks Mileson breaking down in the Hampden dressing room.

He said: "Brooks came in and was very emotional - in fact, the euphoria got to everyone.

"It was nice to see that side of Brooks. He is a very jovial character but to see him shed a tear was touching because it showed how much the club means to him and I can assure you the players share his feelings. "We went back to our hotel after the game. Gavin Skelton and Derek Townsley were feeling down after the penalties but we win as a team and lose as a team. We emphasised that to them.

"All the backroom staff and their wives were there. We enjoyed the night and realised what we had actually achieved."

Innes was proud of the efforts of the Gretna players and believes their Hampden heroics can be used as a springboard for their First Division title challenge.

He said: "This has got to give us great heart for next season.

"It's a disappointment to lose a final but I'm so proud of the boys and so proud to have been the captain of such a team, one that will go down in history.

"But we have to turn this into a positive. We held our own against the second best team in the country.

"Just look at the response we got from the fans at the end - it was a privilege to be there.

"It was the crowning moment of my career leading the team out at Hampden.

"You try to take everything in and to walk out as captain of any team in a final is amazing but the fact it was Gretna and all the fairytale stuff that went with it made it phenomenal."
