Romanov: I tried to sign O’Connor
ROB ROBERTSON September 05 2006

Vladimir Romanov, the Hearts owner, tried to sign the former Hibs striker, Garry O'Connor, from Lokomotiv Moscow just before the transfer window closed last week.
The Lithuanian multi-millionaire said he had received initial encouragement from the Russian club, and they were prepared to do a deal but time ran out for it to be concluded.
Romanov claimed last night that he may approach the Moscow club again when the transfer window reopens in January.

"I wanted to buy O'Connor but the deal didn't happen," said Romanov. "I was in Moscow on August 26 to see him play for Lokomotiv against Luch-Energia Vladivostok and he looked good after coming on as a substitute and scoring."

At the game, Romanov revealed he held discussions with Valeri Filatov, the Lokomotiv president, about a possible transfer. "Filatov said he would get back to me on the Monday regarding an offer but Monday came and there was no word back," he said.
Romanov returned to Moscow from Lithuania two days before the transfer window closed to try to pursue the deal but said it was really "too late to do anything".
He did not rule out another attempt to secure O'Connor in the January transfer window, and said he would think about it when the time comes.

The Russian-born tycoon had hoped to get another chance to see O'Connor play tomorrow when Scotland play Lithuania in Romanov's home city of Kaunas in a Euro 2008 group stage match. However, the striker was ruled out of the game because of illness.
Tynecastle sources last night stressed that the bid to sign O'Connor was a clear indication of the club's ambition to buy top players.

O'Connor would be an expensive proposition for Hearts. He cost Lokomotiv £1.6m in March. His wages are believed to be £16,000 a week and he is on a five-year deal at the Moscow club.
The player has admitted to difficulties with the Russian language, despite being a regular in the Lokomotiv team and scoring goals on a regular basis.
He lives in a smart flat on elite Kutuzovsky Prospekt, which is very close to where former Soviet leaders Leonid Brezhnev and Leonid Andropov once lived and has been a big hit with the Russian supporters.
