Romanov questions competence of Russian referee

ROB ROBERTSON August 28 2006

Vladimir Romanov claims the referee who sent off two Hearts players in Athens was himself suspended earlier this year for two major blunders in a Russian premier league game.
Romanov, the owner of the Tynecastle club, was so furious that two of his players - Julien Brellier and Neil McCann - were ordered off against AEK Athens that he looked into the background of Moscow-based referee Yuri Baskakov.
The Russian Football Federation banned Baskakov for a month but that did not stop him remaining on FIFA's list of approved referees, as he has been since 1997.

The revelation is likely to fuel Hearts' resentment over the way he officiated the game against AEK Athens in which Hearts lost the third round Champions League qualifying match on a 5-1 aggregate, losing 2-1 at Murrayfield and 3-0 in Athens.

Romanov is known to be surprised that, given the question mark over Baskakov, he was allowed to officiate such a key European clash.
Baskakov admitted to a Russian-based news agency yesterday that he was suspended in April this year for one month over two controversial decisions which impacted on the result of a game between Spartak Moscow and Moscow FC.

The final score of the game was 3-3 but Baskakov was found to have erred over the award of a penalty to Moscow FC and in denying a goal to Spartak. Despite this, he insisted his competence for European competitions had not been called into question.
