Hearts sweep aside Selkirk

07.07.2013

A young Hearts XI side romped to a 6-2 victory over Selkirk on Saturday in the Bob Mercer Memorial match.

The match took place at Yarrow Park where a brand new stand, named after former Selkirk and Hearts player Mercer, was unveiled.

On a gloriously sunny day, Darren Murray's side featured several of last year's U17 players, with Scotland U19s 'keeper Jack Hamilton gaining the honour of being the oldest Hearts player on the pitch. Jordan McGhee, Gary Oliver, Adam King and Sam Nicholson, all mainstays of last season's U20s side, featured as well.

It was McGhee who opened the scoring for the Jambos after only 12 minutes, courtesy of a free-kick from the edge of the box.

A minute later it was 2-0, Robbie Buchanan was on-hand to head the ball home following a block from the Selkirk goalkeeper.

Soon after, Buchanan won a penalty when he was brought down in the box. Oliver stepped up and hammered home the third.

The home side got back into the game on 22 minutes when Euan Pritchard nodded past Hamilton from a free-kick.

What followed next was a three goal burst from the men in maroon, all in the space of ten minutes. First, Buchanan scored his second goal of the game, Oliver then grabbed his own double before Nicholson rounded off the day's scoring for Darren Murray's side.

After the break Selkirk pulled one back thanks to Kevin Barr's strike, which proved to be the game's last goal.
