JIM HAMILTON had seen it all before.

Time running out at Tynecastle and a little dark haired midfielder ghosting in at the back post to turn the ball past the keeper.

Ten years ago it was Colin Cameron wearing a maroon jersey.

Here it was Andy Dorman doing the damage against the team Hammy used to play for.

But for big Hammy the similarities were there for everyone to see.

The timing of the runs, the ability to finish and nick vital points for their side.

And the Saints striker also has no doubt Dorman could follow Mickey’s lead and carve himself a career out in England as well.

He said: “The way Andy plays and trains is great. There are not a lot of midfielders like him.

“He can break forward and get into the box and the timing of his runs is brilliant.

“Andy reminds me a lot of Colin Cameron when I played here at Hearts with him. Colin was exactly the same.

“Mickey could score goals and Andy can do that as well.

“He’s definitely good enough to go down and play in England, it just depends what option he decides to go with.

“We’d love him to stay here for as long as he can.

“But he’s got to try and better his career and if he thinks he can do that by playing in England or staying up here I don’t know. We’ve got to try and hold on to him as long as we can.

“But he has the potential and the will to go and do it.”

Dorman’s 90th minute strike salvaged a point for Gus McPherson’s side which seemed unlikely when Eggert Jonsson had blasted Hearts ahead 12 minutes earlier.

The Icelandic ace had hit the post from a corner, but this time took advantage of hesitant defending to drive the ball home.

And the fact Saints had played less than 48 hours earlier was supposed to catch up with them. Not a bit of it. The Buddies were the stronger side going forward and got their reward when Scott Cuthbert nodded Steven Thomson’s free-kick back across goal for Dorman to score.

Saulius Mikoliunas was the villain for Hearts, missing a sitter in the 88th minute to kill the game.

And then the Lithuanian, playing his first game since November, conceded the free-kick which led to the leveller.

It left Jambos boss Csaba Laszlo once again raging at what he sees as indiscipline from all of his players.

Laszlo pointed to the fact Hearts had survived a similar scare at the end of last week’s win over Aberdeen.

But a makeshift central defence of Jonsson and Robbie Neilson showed the lack of resources he currently has at his disposal.

And owner Vladimir Romanov now has to sanction the signing of Lithuanian Arunas Klimavicius this week to give his boss a break.

Hamilton, though, insisted that despite Hearts’ problems it still took great character from his Saints side to get back into the game at the death.

He added: “That’s something you have got to get on with. We had to prepare properly.

“It’s not nice to play two games so soon after each other, but you would rather play than train.

“We rested up on Friday and luckily enough the game on Thursday never went to extra-time. I think Hearts would have been happier if it had done.

“People expected us to tire near the end, but if anything we got even stronger towards the end and that shows the strength we have got.

“The manager changed it about a little bit here and it showed great commitment from the boys to get back into the game.

“We could have used the fact we had a game on the Thursday as an excuse but we prepared well and rested up on Friday.

“We kept going and that shows the character we have in this squad.

“Going 1-0 down so late on means we are delighted to have come away with a point at the end.”

Saints returned to their dressing room to discover Caley Thistle had made up ground on them at the bottom of the table following their win over Hibs.

But the Buddies are also just four points off a top six spot alongside Kilmarnock with the Easter Road club, Hamilton and Motherwell all in their sights.

And hitman Hammy admits the only way he is looking is up.

He said: “If we keep battling and scrapping like we did today then I can’t see us going down the way.

“You look at the results today and Inverness winning closes the gap.

“But we’ll keep battling away and if we can keep producing the performances we have been over the last couple of months we’ll be OK.

“It is so close right now. Nobody fears the Old Firm now so the entire league is getting closer.

“Any side can beat any team on their day in this league now.

“You look upon a game like this as very hard, which it is, but we showed our mental strength and will to get a result.”
