Hearts 2-1 Aberdeen

HEARTS’ Euro hopes were given a massive boost with a crucial comeback at Tynecastle.

The Jambos were trailing to Darren Mackie’s first-half strike when Christian Nade squared it up.

The hosts then bagged all three points after Andrew Driver walloped home a header.

Hearts’ win propels them up to third – a result which left boss Csaba Laszlo hailing the character of his men.

He said: “I must compliment my team. I don’t know how many games they have come from behind to win a game.

“In my opinion, it was a good game, especially in the first half.

“Both teams showed good fighting spirit. You saw a good league game and two teams that want to finish in the top six.”

In a high-octane start, the Dons settled the better of the two teams and soon had the hosts pegged back.

But after absorbing the Aberdeen pressure, Hearts created their first chance in the 12th minute.

Zander Diamond stumbled under a long ball forward and needed stopper Jamie Langfield came to his rescue.

But Aberdeen did make the breakthrough in the 19th minute with a superb volley from Mackie.

Charlie Mulgrew delivered a pinpoint diagonal ball from the halfway line which Mackie angled into the net.

Hearts were more direct after going behind and Bruno Aguiar soon unleashed a shot that flew over the bar.

And they levelled in first-half injury-time after a spell of patient play.

Nade latched on to a header from David Obua before nodding into the corner of the net himself.

The hosts bossed proceedings after the restart and won several corners that they failed to put to good use.

But the home side eventually made their pressure count in the 66th minute.

Obua’s cross from the left was headed in at the back post by Driver to send the Hearts support into raptures.

With time running out, Hearts were content to sit on their lead and that encouraged Aberdeen to attack.

And the Dons were denied an injury-time equaliser by the post after sub Chris Maguire’s volley cannoned back off the upright.
