Former Hearts boss Robbo front-runner for vacant Inverness jobHEARTS legend John Robertson has emerged as the front-runner to succeed Craig Brewster as manager of Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Brewster and his assistant, Malcolm Thomson, were sacked yesterday after a run of seven league defeats which have left Caley Thistle bottom of the SPL. Robertson, who took Caley into the top flight during his previous spell in charge there in the Highlands, has been out of the game since leaving Derry City in December 2007. Charlie Christie, also a former manager of the club, has said he was willing to serve the club in whatever way he could. "I offered my services to Craig before, but he didn't take me up on it, which was disappointing," Christie said. "Someone asked me if I would be interested in coming back again as manager, but I'm not sure. It remains to be seen if the club are looking for up-and-coming managers or someone with more experience. "But I have made it clear to Graeme Bennett (the director of football] that I would like to offer something to the club and I would be willing to help out in any way I can. My concern, and the board's concern, is that we retain our SPL status." Until a new appointment is made, Bennett will be in charge of the team – Caley face a trip to Tynecastle to face Hearts on Saturday – along with the first-team coach, John Docherty, and the goalkeeping coach Stuart Garden. Former Inverness winger Barry Wilson hopes the appointment of a new manager will provide the boost needed to avoid relegation from the SPL. Wilson – now at Queen of the South – believes his old boss may have been able to transform the fortunes of the rock-bottom club had he been given time. Now he is hoping the new man will be able to provide the lift desperately needed to avoid the drop. "Craig has brought four or five new faces in so maybe in time it would have turned around," said Wilson. "It was a disappointing result against Hamilton on Saturday, they lost to a penalty in a game in which, by all accounts, they could have drawn. "The new manager will have a week or so to deal in the transfer market and one thing I think he will need to find is an experienced striker. That has been lacking this season. There is a good bunch of lads there and they are only one point behind Falkirk and six behind Hamilton." Inverness midfielder Russell Duncan admits the players must shoulder some of the responsibility for Brewster's dismissal. And the 28-year-old said the decision to sack the boss has brought a nervousness to the dressing room "It was the players who weren't performing on the park and it was Craig who ended up getting the bullet," he said. "But all the boys will be nervous now. "Everyone will be out to impress and try to up their game. It's the same all over the world, clubs often get a boost when a new manager comes in and players get a wee lift. So, hopefully, whoever comes in will help keep us in the league."
