Jorgensen warns Scotland to beware of FaroesGIANNI RUSSO August 29 2006 Claus Jorgensen, the Coventry City midfielder, has warned Scotland that the Faroe Islands are after a major scalp in their Euro 2008 qualifying group and would like nothing better than to topple Scotland at Celtic Park, as he could dine out on the experience for years to come. The 30-year-old would also earn the bragging rights of the Coventry dressing-room which includes Scotland internationalists Colin Cameron, David McNamee, Don Hutchison and now Kevin Kyle. After a 6-0 thrashing at home by Georgia to open their campaign, Jorgensen knows his side go into Saturday's game as heavy underdogs. "Our strength is in our teamwork and we never give in during a match. We know we're never going to win many matches on our technique and skill so we need to use team-work," he said. "We are due a result against one of the big nations. We have come close against Germany, France and Spain in the past at home and we aim to shake up some teams in the group. "If we could pull off a surprise win against one of the big countries, it would be fantastic for our nation and it would give us more confidence going into future games. We know we could also live off it for a few years as it would be heard throughout world football. "We're aiming to get a couple of wins in this group and there are a few more things we can try against teams. No team likes to come to the Faroes; they are always edgy and nervy when they play in our stadium." Jorgensen, who was born in Denmark but qualifies to play for the Faroes through his mother, dismissed the opening rout by Georgia. "I think the scoreline flattered Georgia. I think they had six shots on target over the 90 minutes and they did not win a single corner whereas we had a few. We had a chance to take the lead at 0-0 and, if it had gone in, maybe it would have changed the game." He feels the Faroes should not be judged only on results, though. "We are a small country and do not have a professional league," he said. "We know we are going to lose more matches than we win but we have to set our own standards. "I think if you judge us on the first 60 minutes of a match, you can see how close we get to teams and now we have to try and progress that so that we are matching teams for 90 minutes." With experienced midfielder Julian Johnsson – a scorer on his last visit to Glasgow – back for Saturday, Jorgensen expects the Faroes to be more resilient than in their opening match. "It will be a tremendous experience playing at Celtic Park. Our squad is made up of accountants, teachers and lorry drivers so this will be a big thing for them," he said. Taken from the Herald |
