Hartley raises hopes of return soonIAIN COLLIN August 16 2006 Paul Hartley boosted Hearts ahead of their crucial clashes with Rangers and AEK by completing his first 45 minutes of the season yesterday. The 29-year-old cut short his involvement with Scotland's get-together in St Andrews to play in a bounce game against Gretna at Hearts' youth academy. Watched by his team-mates Julien Brellier, Christophe Berra and Michal Pospisil, the playmaker lasted 45 minutes of the 2-0 win over May's Scottish Cup final opponents. Hartley has been sorely missed this season after being sidelined by a groin injury that surfaced in the wake of the cup final triumph. The Scotland internationalist's outing yesterday raises the prospects of an appearance in Saturday's trip to Rangers at Ibrox and, perhaps even more significantly, in next week's second leg of the Champions League third-round qualifier in Athens. The player himself, however, was making no promises after admitting he found the going tough against Gretna. He said: "It was good to be back. It's been a long three months and I'm shattered after just 45 minutes, but it was just nice to be back playing again. I felt good when I had the ball, so I just hope I can build up my training over the next couple of days. "I don't know about playing this weekend. I've only played 45 minutes and I'm very tired but we'll see how the next couple of days go and it will be up to the manager." Hearts, who included Steve Banks, Christos Karipidis, Lee Wallace and Tiago Costa, won yesterday's match 2-0, with goals from Bruno Aguiar and Juho Makela. The game also featured the comeback of Gretna striker David Bingham, who completed his first 90 minutes in more than eight months after a viral complaint.  Taken from the Herald |
