A YOUNG Hearts team defeated Edinburgh City 5-2 at Meadowbank last night.

There were doubles from Dennis McLaughlin and John Neill but the Tynecastle outfit had to come from behind after trailing 1-0 at half time.

"We had a great first half against a very strong Hearts side and we were more than a match for them," said City boss Tom Steven. "The result was not too important although no team likes getting beaten. We played some good football against full-time footballers."

City took the lead midway through the first half when former East Fife player Kerr Dodds shot home from 25 yards.

Hearts pressurised City after the break and McLaughlin pounced to shoot behind Alan Mackintosh.

Neill put Hearts ahead with another low drive before substitute Jamie Mole hit the third with 16-yard shot via the base of the post.

Jordan Caddow brought City back into contention when he scored direct from a corner kick. But two goals in the final minute from Neill and McLaughlin, with an unstoppable 30-yard shot, sealed Hearts' victory.

Edinburgh City: Armitt, Morrison, K Ross, Macnamara, Bain, Dodds, Caddow, Hunter, Noon, R Ross, Gair. Subs: Allan, Da Costa, Steven, Capraro, Moyer, Carrol, Mackintosh.
