FULTON WANTS WAIT OFF HIS MIND

CUP FINAL COUNTDOWN: 3 DAYS TO GO
By Ian Orr

STEVE FULTON captained Hearts to Scottish Cup glory in 1998 for the club's first triumph in the tournament for 42 years.

But he reckons eight years is too long for them to have gone without a repeat victory.

Fulton was made skipper when Gary Locke was crocked and went on to lead them to a shock 2-1 win over Rangers.

The 35-year-old - who was an unused substitute for Celtic when they won the Cup in 1989 - played a crucial role, being fouled by Ian Ferguson for the first-minute penalty which Colin Cameron converted.

And when Stephane Adam hit the winner it sparked incredible scenes of joy in Edinburgh.

Around 200,000 were estimated to have filled the streets the following day for the team's open-top bus tour of the city.

Fulton, who coaches the Jambos' Under-12s, is hoping for a repeat.

He said: "I think the reaction was partly down to the fact it had been so long since the club last won the Cup.

"Failure to win it between 1956 and 1998 was too long for a club of Hearts' size - but even eight years is a long time.

"You expect Hearts to be up there for the cups and hopefully they will do it this weekend.

"The scenes in Edinburgh were unreal. Coming from the west, you don't see teams celebrating on an open-top bus.

"I won the Cup with Celtic but there's no way we would have been able to do what Hearts did.

"But in Edinburgh people were everywhere and when we went back to Tynecastle the stadium was full."
