Broken the Old Firm monopolyDespite a truly manic season off the pitch, Heart of Midlothian have finally broken the Old Firm monopoly on places in the Champions League. Their single goal victory over Aberdeen avoids the possibility of a desperate last day shootout with Rangers. This isn’t the first time that Hearts have been in Europe’s premier competition however, although you need a long memory to recall it. The Jambos were Scotland’s representatives twice in the old European Cup but failed to progress on each occasion. In 1958 they beat Standard Liege of Belgium at home but suffered a 5-1 thumping in the away leg. Two years later they drew the then mighty Benfica and were beaten in both legs going down 5-1 on aggregate. Since then their European ventures have been confined to the UEFA/ Fairs Cup and one outing in the old Cup-Winners Cup. Back in 1989 the Edinburgh club were UEFA cup quarter-finalists and were only beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich. Apart from that good run, Hearts record has lots of room for improvement but having achieved a shot at the Champions League Vladimir Romanov will settle for nothing less than a passage to the lucrative group stages.
