Saints miss out on byeWednesday night's result at Tynecastle has had more of an impact on St Johnstone than anyone could imagine. The Gorgie club's victory over Aberdeen that clinched second place now means that Scottish Cup finalists Gretna will enter the UEFA Cup and as such, will not enter the CIS Cup until the third round stage. Speaking exclusively to Vital St Johnstone, Jim Kirkpatrick of the SFL confirmed St Johnstone's seeding will be altered because of the Raydale Park club's situation: 'In accordance with the Rules the four clubs which qualify for European competitions enter the Cup at round three therefore all the clubs will adjust their places in the first two rounds.' Originally, St Johnstone were to be seeded 14th - courtesy of their second place finish in Division One - and the top 14 clubs receive first round byes but Saints will now find themselves in the unseeded opening round of the competition where they could potentially draw a strong Division One outfit like Hamilton Accies or Ross County. Should Saints progress they will be one of the 16 seeded clubs and it will be interesting to see what develops if Saints make it to round three, whether they will be 14th seeds or if that honour will go to Gretna, who should be seeded 23rd. Saints last received a first round bye in 2002/03 when we reached the third round stage before losing out to Livingston. |
