Scala waiting for Hearts call

BARRY ANDERSON

NEVIO SCALA is still desperate to be the new head coach of Hearts and is waiting by the phone for Vladimir Romanov to ring.

The Italian coach today blasted reports claiming he has ruled himself out of the running to become the club's new manager as "not true", admitting to the Evening News that he is on tenterhooks hoping to hear from the Tynecastle owner. Scala wants to clear up any misunderstanding that may lead Romanov to believe he no longer wants the Hearts job and says he is determined to uncover every detail he can on the club to ensure he would be able to match the ambitions of the Lithuanian. I am very interested," maintained Scala. "I would be very happy to coach Hearts.

"It is simply not true to say otherwise. Why would I say that after spending two days with Mr Romanov? There are many things to discuss and clear up because I want, if it is possible, to begin this job when everything is ready and in place.

"I also want to learn about every player Hearts have and about football in Scotland. Mr Romanov wants to build a very good team and he wants to have a prosperous future with this team.

"I said to him that we would have much work to do, but he said not to worry because he will give me time.

"He is back from his holiday on Thursday or Friday and said he will call me then to meet again. I am not sure where or when it will be, I only want this call to come from Mr Romanov or Phil Anderton."

Anderton is expected to interview the other major candidate for the head coach's position, George Burley, tomorrow in Edinburgh. However, Scala may be at a slight advantage having had the chance to put his case to Hearts first.

A stumbling block could arise over when Scala would officially take control as he seeks to enhance his already competent command of English and familiarise himself with the workings of Scottish football. "I said to Mr Romanov that, for me, taking this job would be a very interesting challenge," added the 57-year-old, "but I honestly think that before I take this job I must be told everything and hold more discussions."

Those talks are likely to detail what transfer budget may be available to the incoming coach and who he could identify as the players that can drive Hearts closer to the Old Firm in Scotland whilst enhancing their reputation in European competition.

For that purpose, the cogs of Scala's mind have already been turning. He said: "I didn't speak about money with Mr Romanov, we only discussed the project he has for Hearts.

"When I have agreed my contract with the club then we can examine the situation regarding transfer money."
