Hearts to maintain approach

PAUL KIDDIE

HEARTS No. 2 Peter Houston today insisted the Jambos are not getting carried after winning their opening SPL match against Dundee.

The Gorgie outfit went into Saturday’s clash as most people’s tip to claim third place in the league for the third year running.

And they produced a polished performance at Dens Park to launch their challenge in the ideal manner.

Two home games against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock now follow but Houston insists there is still plenty to work on.

"There is no way we will be getting carried away," he said. "We noticed a few things which could have been done better on Saturday and we will work on that with the players. It’s all about getting them tuned in for the visit of Aberdeen now.

"I thought it was a very good team performance at the weekend and we looked really solid throughout the match. Our final ball was maybe the only thing which let is down and the guys perhaps have still to find their shooting boots but it is early in the season and that can be worked on."

Winger Joe Hamill turned in one of his best displays in a Hearts jersey and the youngster has been urged to reproduce his Dens Park performance in the weeks ahead to make a first-team place his own.

"Joe is the type of player who thrives on confidence," added Houston. "He played a few pre-season games and started against Dundee. We believe in him - he has to start believing in himself. He has bags of talent and if he can produce performances like that he’ll be in the team every week."
