HIBS drew first blood in the capital rivalries last night as a young Easter Road side lifted the East of Scotland Shield at Tynecastle.

A second-half goal from an impressive-looking Dean Shiels, plundered by new manager Tony Mowbray from Arsenal this summer, as well as first-half strikes from fellow new signing Sam Morrow and striker Stephen Dobbie, helped ease aside a strong Hearts outfit.

The Gorgie men fielded new loan signing Michael Stewart in a strong line-up, which also included Scotland keeper Craig Gordon, striker Dennis Wyness, midfielder Neil MacFarlane and defender Patrick Kisnorbo.

Hibs, on the other hand, had only Derek Riordan, returning from a serious ankle injury, and Dobbie as first-team picks.

Hibs took the lead when Shiels played a 1-2 with Morrow before spearing over a ball for Kevin Nicol to chase. The midfielder took the ball round the advancing Gordon, and Dobbie guided his shot into the unguarded net.

A minute from the break, Hibs went two up. Shiels embarked on a mazy run from the halfway line then Morrow chipped the ball over Gordon.

The home side pulled one back from the spot. Grant Tierney was unceremoniously dumped by John Kane, and Wyness slotted home the penalty.

Eight minutes after the interval, the visitors regained their advantage with another superb goal. Morrow weighted a through ball perfectly for Shiels and the Northern Ireland Under-21 cap tucked it away.
