Forget Archie, wee Jim fulfilled my dream

SO wee Archie’s 1978 Dutch masterpiece won Scotsport’s "Top Ten Scottish Goals" competition. Almost inevitably.

The gem in the Gemmill canon. An archetypal Scottish piece de resistance of inside forward chicanery. Shades of Alex James and Jimmy Mason. The other contending luminaries - Strachan (86), McCalliog (67), Lorimer (74), Narey (82), Jordan (73), Cooper (85), Dalglish (77 and 84) and Baxter (63) - were surely destined to cede first place. My own favourite though - albeit a lowly seventh in the panel’s eyes - remains Baxter’s 63 Wembley tour de force. The context was all. The previous expedition had witnessed that 9-3 debacle.

Captain Caldow had broken a leg. Then gallus Jim dispossessed Armfield with a right (sic) foot tackle, strode languidly into the box, dropped a shoulder, and curled a left footer past a falling Banks. Forget the customary heroic failure sketch.

We Had A Dream. Slim Jim fulfilled it for us all.
