Queen's turn up trumps as Saints pay the penalty

17 Aug 1989

Queen of the South 1, St Johnstone 0

SECOND division Queen's put St Johnstone out of the Skol Cup in no uncertain measure at Palmerston last night.

And it was the Dumfries side's first home win for eleven months.

The goal that settled the match came in 38 minutes.

The Dumfries defence pushed a long ball upfield which drew Balavage out of goal.

Tommy Sloan lobbed the ball over the keeper's head but sweeper Paul Cherry ran in and punched it clear.

Gary Fraser made no mistake with the spot kick.

Hearts 3, Montrose 0

HEARTS manager Alex MacDonald tried a new partnership up front against Montrose at Tynecastle, promoting Scott Crabbe to link with Husref Musemic, and the pair grabbed all three goals inside the opening 35 minutes.

After six minutes, John Colquhoun found Musemic with a cross and, when his header broke to Crabbe, the 21-year-old's low drive was a winner all the way.

Then Colquhoun created another scoring chance, this time his cross was met by Musemic who steered a header away from David Larter.

Hearts' barrage was completed after 35 minutes when Crabbe curled a free kick from 25 yards around the wall.

Clydebank 3, Meadowbank 1

CLYDEBANK took their place in the next round of the Skol Cup thanks to an amazing two-goal finish.

The Bankies took the lead after 33 minutes when a free kick by John Davies was headed in by Ken Eadie.

The Edinburgh side hit back six minutes later when David Roseburgh looped a header from a Steve Logan free kick beyond keeper Jim Gallacher.

Then in 53 minutes Bankies sweeper John Mahar, who had been booked in the first half, was sent off.

But that reverse put a sting in the home side, and substitute Gerry McGurn sent a superb 25-yard drive low into the net after 70 minutes.

In the final minute, Eadie completed the scoring with a drive.

Brechin City 0, Falkirk 3

SAM McGivern got Falkirk off to a great start after five minutes when he shot into the net from six yards.

The visitors forced three corners in succession after 25 minutes, but Baptie headed over the top to relieve the pressure.

Falkirk were awarded a penalty when Brown held back McGivern after 52 minutes, and Stuart Burgess netted.

Beaton completed the scoring when he almost burst the net from 20 yards.
