Hearts manager Gary Locke: I wish we could rest some players but we don't have a big enough squad27 Aug 2013 08:42 Gordon Parks LOCKE admits it's going to be a difficult season especially when a transfer embargo prevents the luxury of squad rotation for the Jambos boss. GARY LOCKE has told his Hearts teenagers to forget any hope of getting a rest at Raith Rovers tonight. A transfer embargo prevents the luxury of squad rotation for the Jambos boss ahead of their League Cup clash at Stark’s Park. And even Locke admits he’s feeling the pace of a start to the season that is already stretching his squad to the limit after taking seven points from their four games. He said: “I wish I could rest a few players but we don’t have a big enough squad. “On Saturday I felt absolutely shattered after the win against Aberdeen, so I don’t know how the players were feeling. “We know it’s a hard season. So I think when we do get a chance to give them a wee rest we’re going to try to make the most of it. “It’s a huge concern. With the international break coming up, my intentions are to give the players a couple of days off. We’re going to need a lot of the same players to get us through the whole season.” Locke admits his side will be in the unusual position of going into tonight’s game as favourites. But a special relationship with Raith will see a host of Stark’s Park players having a point to prove. He said: “This might be slightly different for the players in that they might be favourites but that’s something we have to handle. “Winning breeds confidence. You can see the players are happy with the way they’re playing at the moment. “We’ll be going to Raith knowing it’s going to be difficult coming up against ex-team-mates. “A lot of boys have been there on loan and Raith have been fantastic in developing our young players. We have a good relationship with them but we’ll be going there to win. “A few Raith players have been here as youths and played in our first team. I’m sure they’ll be looking to put one over on us and I’m fully expecting a hard game.” Hearts hammered the Fife side in a pre-season friendly but Rovers winger Grant Anderson insists that is not relevant to tonight’s clash. He said: “We were delighted to get paired against Hearts so soon after playing them in a friendly. “We lost 5-0 but it won’t have any bearing on the cup tie. They had 10 chances and scored half of them while we had 10 chances and couldn’t put the ball in the net. “So I’d like to think this will be an even contest just as the last one was – apart from the goals tally. “It’s another great game for us after we beat Dunfermline last week.” Taken from the Daily Record |
