The Big Call: Should Stevie May's goal against Hearts have stood?

STV 5 August 2013 18:15 BST

Stevie May netted a fine goal to secure a win for St Johnstone over Hearts at the weekend but a change to the offside rule cast doubt over whether it should have stood.

The definition of "interfering with an opponent" was modified in the close season to make it easier for match officials to determine if an offence has been committed.

David Wotherspoon looks to make a motion towards May's shot as it made its way into the bottom corner, with Hearts keeper Jamie MacDonald appearing to not adjust his feet to deal with the incoming ball because he potentially anticipates Wotherspoon challenging for the ball.

The rule now says that interfering with an opponent is now defined as: "...preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent's line of vision or challenging an opponent for the ball."

Referee Stevie MacLean and his assistant both deliberated over the strike, before the referee decided to award the goal.
