Weekend review

15.07.2013

Gary Locke's men made the short trip over the water to Fife for what was their first pre-season friendly on home soil. The gaffer picked his strongest team available, here's how they lined up:

The Jambos started the match with attacking intent and Ryan Stevenson went close with a curling shot that grazed Pars 'keeper Michal Hrivnak's left hand post. It didn't take long for the men in maroon to get in front, Brad McKay lept to meet David Smith's corner and his bullet header rattled the back of the net on eight minutes.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0. Smith's trickery in the box saw him fouled, Jamie Hamill stepped up and slotted home from the resultant penalty.

Hearts finished the half the stronger side, but that honour went to Dunfermline in the second half. They pulled a goal back through Ryan Thomson in the 63rd minute.

The Jambos held out though, and skipper for the day Hamill lifted the inaugural Supporters Direct Scotland Fans' Cup, sponsored by QTS.

What the press said:

"Given that this was a pre-season friendly, arranged to raise funds for these crisis-hit clubs, it was less a celebration than an act of defiance, a reminder that Hearts are still alive and, despite all that has happened these last few months, doing what they were set up to do in the first place." - Scotsman online

"Hearts supporters continued to rally behind the club today as more than 3000 turned out at East End Park to see their team win a friendly against another club in administration." - Sunday Mail

What they said:

"It was a much better second half performance from the Fifers but it was the capital side's fans who were on song for the presentation of the QTS sponsored Supporters Direct Fans Cup." - www.dafc.co.uk

What we said:

"Gary Locke will be pleased with the workout and the victory as Hearts continue their preparations for the new season. Next up is a trip to Stark's Park on Wednesday to face Raith Rovers." - www.heartsfc.co.uk
