JOHN Sutton has revealed he was ready to sign for Motherwell even before Hearts fell into
administration.

The striker signed up for his second spell at Fir Park yesterday after being made redundant.

Sutton was told at the end of the season he was part of Gary Locke’s plans for the new campaign.

But shortly afterwards other Gorgie sources told his agent he was surplus to requirements and Sutton was made redundant by Hearts’ administrators BDO on Thursday.

He said: “It was a bit messy. When the season finished I was part of the plans at Hearts.

“Suddenly, administration was being mentioned. A couple of weeks after that I wasn’t part of the plans.

“That changed things for me. It got a bit complicated and things came on the horizon that meant I might even have been here earlier, before administration.

“But that’s an end to it now and there’s a lot to look forward to. It’s good to be back at Motherwell.”

Sutton, 29, signed a two-year deal at Fir Park, where he was hugely successful between 2008-2011.

Signed by Mark McGhee from Wycombe he netted 44 times in 115 appearances. But his hottest run of form followed Stuart McCall’s arrival in January 2011 when he scored 11 times towards the end of the season.

Sutton’s keen to make his mark in Europe after Well were pipped to a place in the Europa League group stages three years ago.

He added: “I’ve two big regrets from before. The first was losing the Scottish Cup Final to Celtic.

“My second is being knocked out the Europa League by Odense. We were better than them. Maybe this season we can edge over the line.”
