John Sutton couldn't believe Hearts' rotten luck in front of goal as today's Scottish Communities League Cup Final ended in defeat as St Mirren triumphed in the first cup final of the season.

Despite scoring the first and last goals in the game, it was goals conceded that proved to be the dufference between the two sides.

Speaking in the mixed zone after the match, John lamented the lack of sharpness in front of goal as Hearts hit the woodwork three times.

"We just didn't get the second goal. We played well enough but not well enough on the day. St Mirren were clinical with their chances."

"The last 10 minutes were crazy and we should have had the equaliser. I can't believe our luck."

Hearts had a nightmare start to the second half as St Mirren took the lead within 35 seconds of the restart, Steven Thompson scoring a fantastic goal on the turn after a cross from the left.

"Stevie Thompson's a great striker and it was a top finish although we let the cross in too easily. We can't concede so soon after half time and get away with it."

Finally, John revealed his happiness for Gary Locke who was appointed manager on a full-time basis, but regretted that they couldn't win the cup for him, and vowed to try and end a "poor season" on a high.

"Everyone's pleased for Gary but we're all gutted for him as well now. I'm hopeful that we can keep the squad together now. If we can get everyone playing to their capabilities, we could do better. This season has been really poor for a club like this."
