Teale will make the most of his final fling

Wing king Gary Teale hopes there’s a happy ending for St Mirren at Hampden tomorrow...to help erase the memories of a League Cup Final thrashing at the hands of Manchester United.

Teale was part of the Wigan team that went all the way to the final of the English version of the League Cup competition back in 2006.

However, there was heartache for the former Scotland star as United crushed Wigan 4-0 in a one-sided match at the Millennium Stadium.

Now, at the age of 34, Teale knows this weekend’s clash with Hearts may well be his last chance of capturing a winner’s medal.

He said: “Man United had Ronaldo, Rooney, van Nistelrooy and Ferdinand in their team for that final. Not too shabby, eh?

“They scored before half-time and then after half-time too and that kind of killed it for us.

“There are similarities between Wigan and St Mirren in terms of that occasion as we were a smaller club too but, hopefully, I can enjoy a better result this time!

“When players come to the tail-end of their career, reaching a cup final is something they think will never happen again, so it’s going to rank right up there as one of my proudest moments.”
