Sunday's Final tops the lot for Danny Lennon

Saints boss Danny Lennon reckons Sunday’s Scottish Communities League Cup Final with Hearts at Hampden will be a career highlight.

Lennon has never taken a team to a national final before.

As a player, at Raith Rovers, he missed the 1994 League Cup Final with Celtic due to injury just days before it.

And as a manager, he’s going to uncharted territory.

Lennon said: “In terms of importance, this game is right up there with any other in my career.

“It’s early in my career, so it’s fantastic to experience a cup final at 43.

“We’ve never managed to get past the quarter-final stage before but we’ve done that now.

“We’ve won a semi-final, which has brought a lot of joy.

“But now that we’re in a final we have to go and win it. It’s pure and simple.

“When I came to St Mirren, I felt one of the cups would be our best chance of silverware.

“We’re not going to win the league, with the strength and depth of Celtic and Rangers.

“We loved the occasion at Hampden against Celtic.

“We’ve experienced it, but it’s up to us to ensure we’re at our best on Sunday.”

He added: “By 4.45pm, I want the players to be sure they’ve left everything they had on the pitch. Hopefully, that will be enough to see us through.”
