Be afraid Jambos...we’re the GHOSTBUSTERSBy ROBERT MARTIN Published: 01st January 2013 BEN WILLIAMS helped Hibs lay one ghost to rest when they finally beat champions Celtic on Saturday. Now the big goalkeeper wants to bust another hoodoo when his side head for Hearts tomorrow. Leigh Griffiths’ stunning winner against Neil Lennon’s men ended a FOUR-YEAR wait for a home win against the Hoops. Now Pat Fenlon’s side are gearing up for Gorgie — where Hibs haven’t tasted victory for three-and-a-half years. And Williams says the Easter Road side are keen to set another record straight. He said: “We hadn’t beaten Celtic for four years at Easter Road, and that’s a long, long time in football. “Now we’re going to Tynecastle, where I’m told we haven’t won for almost as long. “But if we put in the same work there as we did against Celtic and play the way we can, there’s no reason why we can’t end that jinx or hoodoo or whatever you want to call it. “Beating Celtic has given everyone a massive lift. We had gone through a bit of a sticky patch, losing to Motherwell and Ross County at home. “But if we can get a result at Hearts it will turn the festive period into a pretty good one for us. And we definitely believe we can after Saturday’s performance. “As a keeper, I was happy we kept a clean sheet against a team that has been free-scoring in the SPL. “But it was how we worked for it that pleased me more than anything. We managed to get in Celtic’s faces and stopped them playing the way they wanted to. “But we were also still able to knock the ball about when we had it. “And those are the qualities we are going to need if we’re going to take anything from Tynecastle. “It just goes to show you that, in this transitional period we are in, working hard should be our MINIMUM aim. “We’re not good enough to think we can just turn up and outplay teams. “The performance against Celtic set the standard we have to try to reach in every game we play from now on.” Hibs ended their miserable run of 12 games without a derby win when they ended the Jambos’ Scottish Cup reign at the start of last month. The win is the highlight of Williams’ time at the club so far. But the 30-year-old admits a triumph at Tynecastle would mean just as much now he knows what winning the capital clash means to people around Easter Road. He said: “I was involved in a couple of good rivalries down south. “When I was at Crewe the big game was against Port Vale and when I was at Colchester the main rivals were Southend. “But I have never experienced anything as big as this, especially with the two clubs in the one city. Everything else just seems to pale into insignificance. “That was shown when their manager spoke about them trying to get above us before the winter break — which they can’t do now. But that just shows the rivalry. “Here at Hibs we’re trying to turn around the fortunes of this club after a disappointing couple of years. “And make no mistake, if we are going to do that then we need to beat Hearts. “The feeling after the Cup win last month was one of the best I’ve experienced. “There were 17,000 in the ground that day and the atmosphere was just electric. “My favourite memory was seeing everyone still in the ground long after full-time celebrating, that was great to see. The overriding reaction was relief and satisfaction. “Those of us who came into the club in the summer knew what it meant to those who went through the Cup Final loss. Williams, though, knows a win at Tynecastle will mean even more to the Hibs fans who make the short trip across the city tomorrow night. And the keeper is looking forward to his first experience of playing in Gorgie. He said: “I’ve been told Tynecastle is a great ground to play at and I can’t wait. “And I’d love to see our fans staying behind and celebrating once more. “We’re obviously raring to go on the back of a really good win against Celtic.” Striker Griffiths will be key to Hibs’ hopes of winning the game. But his future at the club remains uncertain with his loan deal up this month. Boss Pat Fenlon has insisted the club is doing all they can to extend the 22-year-old’s deal from Wolves. Griffiths has also expressed his desire to stay on until the end of the season. And Williams admits he would love to see the Molineux club agree a new deal. He said: “It would be a massive boost if we could keep Sparky at the club beyond January. “He’s a big player for us — you saw that with the goal he scored against Celtic. “It was a brilliant, instinctive finish. “He went seven games without scoring but even then he never let it get him down. He’d still create chances for everyone else. He’s a great player.” |
