One strike costs Motherwell three pointsMotherwell lost the Sunday lunchtime game to Hearts thanks to a fine strike by Grainger early in the first half. To add to our woes Hutchinson limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury. The only change from the intended eleven against United was the inclusion of Kerr at right back at the cost of Ojamaa. Ramsden played at centre back and Hateley played the first half in midfield. The few hundred ‘Well supporters (bathing in the bright October sunshine) were impressed with the commanding start the team made. Hammell’s neat pass gave Murphy room in the middle of the park and he tested the Hearts ‘keeper who was forced to concede a corner. We racked up five corners before the break but the opposition defence were not troubled. defend Hearts soon showed some threat and Driver’s effort caused some concern as it whizzed beyond Randolph’s right hand post. The ‘keeper had no chanve five minutes later when Grainger, unchallenged, unleashed one of those shots that looked in as soon as it left his foot. Those unfortunates in the away stand had a great view as it flew into the net. Both teams were intent on building patiently but we would occasionally send a high ball to Higdon. His frustration with referee Collum grew as time and time again Zaliukas climbed and clambered his way to the ball. We had a good shout for a penalty just after the half hour when our man was unable to jump due to the over zealous attentions of his shadow. Shortly before half-time Hutchinson succumbed to a hamstring pull and the whistle blew before Carswell could come on as a replacement. The game flowed from end to end in the second period. Our main route to the Hearts goal came from the right wing as Humphrey began to get some success against Grainger. After collecting a 50 yard cross field pass he reached the box and found Higdon with a cut back. The strikers attempt came close. There were several repetitions of this tactic. But Higdon’s efforts were not good enough. Our best chance of an equaliser came followed another cross from Humphrey. He found Higdon at the back post and the ball was headed to Law 15 yards out. The midfielder’s header was bound for the postage stamp but Webster’s goal line clearance kept their goal intact. Ojamaa replaced Murphy and as the clock ran down Daley came on for Law. No goal came and the home fans were able to celebrate a the first home win since the opening day of the season. A share of the points would have reflected the balance of play but the solitary strike was fit to win any match. We look forward to a Friday night game against Hibs at Fir Park. http://www.motherwell-mad.co.uk |
