We’ve had to BAN my uncle from the Cup Final bus.. cos he’s a HibeeROBERT THOMSON Published: Today at 00:03 SCOTT ROBINSON’S got so many family and friends going to Hampden for Saturday’s showdown they’ve had to hire their own supporters’ bus. But there’s no room for the Hearts midfielder’s uncle Billy Maloney — because he’s a Hibee! That’s despite the fact the lifelong Easter Road fan has taken to watching the Jambos since Robinson became a regular in the side. The prospect of actually sitting among the Hearts fans in Mount Florida was too much for him to bear — and the bus had been declared a Hibs-free zone anyway. Robinson, 20, laughed: “My uncle Billy has been to every single game this season in the Hearts end because he’s there to see me. “But he’s said to me ‘listen, this is a one-off so I have to go to the Hibs end’. “There is a coach going through, it’s leaving from my sister’s work with about 25 people, all Hearts fans. “My uncle is banned — he’s not getting near it! He’s going on another bus with Hibs fans. “I grew up as a Hearts fan but my uncle, my grandad and my cousins are Hibs fans. “My auntie used to be a Hibs fan too but she’s turned into a diehard Jambo now because they’ve been coming to watch me play. “She has even got a Hearts top and a scarf.” Robinson managed to get 50 briefs for his family and friends but admits the demand was so huge that he could have taken delivery of many more. He added: “I have got about 50 tickets in total but I have had so many more people asking me for them. Everyone I know and everyone I seem to meet has asked me. “There have even been people I’ve not heard from in ages sending me texts as well! “I would have loved to have got everyone tickets but I think you could have sold Hampden out a couple of times over, so it wasn’t possible. “We got 30 tickets originally and managed to get it up to 50. “But even then there’s more people wanting to go. I feel like I’ve let a few folk down but I just hope that they can all understand the problem.” Robinson, who is the youngest ever player to star for Hearts, has broken through to become a regular this season and admits that the prospect of running out at the National Stadium for his boyhood heroes is the stuff of dreams. He said: “I was with the youth team in 2006 when Hearts won the Cup the last time. “I remember watching it on TV and cheering them on. We were playing for the youth team the next day so we didn’t go to Hampden. “It is the kind of thing you look at and say ‘I hope that’s me one day’ so it will be a dream come true if I’m involved on Saturday. “I remember going to training years ago and winding down the car window and waving at Rudi Skacel. “I would never have thought years down the line I would be playing in the same team as him and looking forward to a Cup Final. “Rudi has won the Cup with Hearts before so with him and the likes of Andy Webster around the younger lads look up to them. “They have all the experience so they will be big players for us on the day.” Edinburgh native Robinson knows all about the rivalry between the clubs and admits the supporters of the losing side will have to keep a low profile for some time. With Hibs having waited 110 years for a Scottish Cup the stakes seem higher for them — but Robinson insists it’s exactly the same for both clubs. He said: “We’re counting down the days now because the excitement is building. “You can sense it everywhere you go in Edinburgh, people are talking about it and looking forward to it so much. “It is a huge occasion, it has been over 100 years since the last Hearts v Hibs final. “That’s why it means so much to the fans. “It is the biggest Edinburgh derby of all time and we all know just what it means to the supporters. “The rivalry is brilliant and whoever wins their fans will be celebrating — but whoever loses will probably go into hiding for a week!” Hearts’ SPL form has seen them naturally installed as favourites but Robinson insists that will count for nothing when the game kicks off. Hibs boss Pat Fenlon has an impressive track record in cup competitions back in Ireland so the Gorgie players know they will be facing a team full of belief they can win. He said: “Going into a final it is a one-off game and anyone can win, that’s the way we are looking at it. “Form doesn’t mean anything in games like this. “We have done better than Hibs in the SPL but nobody should read anything into that. “There will be a big crowd backing them, they will believe they can beat us just like we think we can beat them. “Whoever comes out on top on the day will deserve it.” |
