Eggert Jonsson insists recent cash crisis at Hearts won't wreck his memories of Tynecastle

Dec 22 2011 by Craig Swan

EGGERT JONSSON last night insisted the recent torture at Tynecastle won't wreck his fond memories of Hearts.

The Icelandic international midfielder has escaped the Gorgie misery to clinch a dream three-year deal in the English Premiership with Wolves.

Jonsson's departure comes after three months of not receiving his wages on time along with the rest of Paulo Sergio's squad.

With the matter now in the hands of the SPL after an official complaint was lodged by PFA Scotland, the Hearts players face an uncertain future.

Jonsson has escaped the troubles at the right time – but is adamant the cash crisis hasn't soured his time at Tynecastle.

Jonsson, who spent six years at Hearts, said: "I've got a lot of friends up there so it is sad to be leaving them behind – I enjoyed my time in Edinburgh.

"The only thing is that I've not won any trophies with Hearts.

"I played in Europe, though, and also played a fair few internationals during my time there so hopefully I can bring my best form to Wolves and continue to improve."

With uncertainty still clouding the capital club, Jonsson's switch to the Premiership ranks as a sensational opportunity.

The 23-year-old was courted by Championship outfit Ipswich in the summer but he's hit the jackpot after impressing Wolves boss Mick McCarthy.

The Molineux gaffer has been a regular in Gorgie, having bought Christophe Berra and looked at Lee Wallace before the left-back joined Rangers last summer.

During his spying missions to Scotland, Jonsson's ability caught the eye and with his contract almost up, the Midlands men pounced.

Jonsson, who will join Wolves when the transfer window re-opens in nine days, said: "It was last week that I first heard of a possible deal and then I went down for the medical.

"It happened quickly and as soon as I knew of Wolves' interest, I was really excited.

"I've been playing up in Scotland for a while and feel ready to take the next step.

"Wolves is a great club and hopefully I can get into the team and stay there."

The utility man is looking forward to getting going in England's top flight and could make his debut against Chelsea on January 2.

And he admits having former SPL stars Berra and Steven Fletcher already at Molineux will make things easier.

He said: "Christophe and I played together for three years at Hearts and he's a good mate of mine, so I'm glad to team up with him again.

"I've met the manager and I liked the way he came across.

"He seems to be doing things the right way and, hopefully, I will help him here.

"I'm really looking forward to working with him."

McCarthy said: "We've been watching Eggert for a long time and he has impressed our scouts up in Scotland.

"He's a versatile midfielder who can play in a number of positions. Eggert's a good player and he's got more improvement in him. He should get better.

"Playing alongside better players in a better league will only help him in that respect."
