Third time lucky for Eggert as Hearts midfielder finds net

EGGERT JONSSON scored his first goal of the season against Inverness then admitted it was a case of third time lucky after he was robbed of strikes against both Hibs and Ayr United.

The Hearts midfielder headed the winner 15 minutes from the end of Saturday’s 2-1 victory to finally etch his name on the scoresheet. His celebrations showed a release of frustration after he was denied two goals earlier in the campaign.

Andy Webster was credited with Hearts’ second against Hibs in August’s SPL encounter at Tynecastle, whilst referee Iain Brines controversially disallowed Jonsson’s effort against Ayr in the League Cup.

The Icelander was elated at scoring such a crucial goal against Inverness to end a four-game winless sequence for his club.

“I’ve had two goals taken away, the League Cup goal and one against Hibs. It was pleasing to get my first goal of the season and it was the winning goal as well,” he said.

“We’re happy with the three points. We’ve been playing well for the last few games but not getting results. On Saturday the conditions were bad, we didn’t get a good rhythm and we didn’t play that well. But it’s a massive three points for us.

“Although we weren’t getting results we felt we were playing well, so we weren’t that low on confidence. We said to ourselves that if we kept playing the way we were playing then we would get a bit of luck and start scoring goals again.

“On Saturday we didn’t play well but we got the three points and that was the most important thing.”

Jonsson encouraged Hearts to build on Saturday’s success when St Johnstone visit Tynecastle this weekend. “It was really important, after all the things that have been going on, to get the win. It’s a massive boost for us and hopefully we can push on from here,” he told the club website.

“It’s a big game at home again and we really need to make sure we push on from here and keep progressing. We really need to get back up the table where we think we belong and show the fans what we’re capable of doing.”

Paulo Sergio, the Hearts manager, echoed Jonsson’s comments about the importance of the victory. “I think we deserved this win more than anybody and the players deserved it. We deserved different results in our last four matches (before Saturday). I hope these three points can restore our confidence and help the team play better.”

n HEARTS Under-19s scored twice in the closing minutes to end Celtic’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 victory at Barrowfield yesterday. After Paul George had opened the scoring, Callum Tapping equalised before Callum Paterson struck a late winner.
