Hearts sex offender Craig Thomson’s future in limbo as loan deal ends

The future of Hearts defender Craig Thomson was today placed back into doubt after the player completed a loan spell in Lithuania.

Thomson completed a temporary stint at FBK Kaunas on Sunday, signing off from a four-month stay in Eastern Europe with a 4-2 defeat that left the Lithuanian club a lowly tenth-place finish in the league.Full-back Thomson was at the centre of controversy in June when he was placed on the sex offenders’ register after pleading guilty to “lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour” and is now believed to be back in Scotland.

The Evening News understands the player won’t be returning to Hearts’ Riccarton training facility, and the club today confirmed that the player’s future at the club has not yet been resolved.

“There has not been any definitive solution to the situation,” said a Tynecastle spokesman. “His loan contract does not expire until January, but the Lithuanian season is already over and he would not be able to play for Hearts until the new year.”

Thomson is expected to train alone in order to maintain fitness while his prospects of first team football at Hearts remain in the balance.

It is thought, however, that the player may choose to go on holiday.

Many Hearts fans were strongly against the notion of Thomson playing for the club following his criminal conviction, but it remains to be seen whether or not time has proved something of a healer of relations between the player and the Scottish football public.

Although Jambos manager Paulo Sergio arrived in Edinburgh with Thomson having begun his loan stint in Lithuania, the Portuguese boss has received reports on the player’s recent form.
