Hearts targeted after piling on misery for Hibs

Colin Calderwood will not be happy about bucking a trend. Routinely, the appointment of a new manager at a club leads to a positive bounce in form, a scenario Hibernian had in mind when John Hughes was removed from office last month.

Yet Calderwood, his replacement, has now presided over three defeats. The latest loss will be the sorest, Hearts cantering to victory at the home of their city rivals. Even the level of glee emanating from the visiting support seemed toned down in an admission of just how poor Hibs were.

Hibs lie joint bottom of the table, a situation which shows little sign of improving with a trip to Ibrox to come on Wednesday night. Calderwood, who left a relatively comfortable position as a coach at Newcastle United to step back into the front line, could now be forgiven second thoughts.

"I think there is light at the end of the tunnel," Calderwood said. "I understand the importance of this game but I have to deal in the black and white, the performance level and that we have lost a game at home."

Hibs will also face unwanted interest from the Scottish Premier League. The Hearts midfielder Rudi Skacel had several missiles thrown at him from the stands immediately after a wild lunge from the Hibs captain, Derek Riordan, on the Czech had resulted in a deserved red card. Riordan should have grown out of such lunacy before now. Two other Hearts players, Kevin Kyle and Rubn Palazuelos, were also targeted by missile throwers.

"It is important that emotion doesn't overtake the situation," said Calderwood, who confirmed Riordan will be disciplined by his club. Two smoke bombs thrown onto the pitch from the Hearts support at the time of their opening goal led to a hold-up in play, another matter which will prompt the SPL's attention.

A dour first half had been brought to life by David Templeton, who took out five Hibs defenders in a 30-yard run that culminated in a low finish beyond Mark Brown. Stephen Elliott, handed a first Hearts start, earned instant acclaim from one half of Edinburgh by securing the points. The former Manchester City and Sunderland player spun cleverly inside the penalty area before drilling home, Templeton having knocked the ball into his path. The ease at which Hearts closed out their win proved too much for Riordan and some in the stands.

"There is no need for that," said the Hearts manager, Jim Jefferies, of the missile throwing. "The derbies are great occasions, they shouldn't be spoiled."
