Relief as knee injury to in-form hitman Elliot isn't as bad as feared

CALUM ELLIOT could be fit to face Dundee United on Sunday provided a scan on his injured knee reveals no serious damage. The Hearts striker missed last night's Co-operative Cup victory over Elgin City and was due to be examined today.
Medical staff at Riccarton had suspected cartilage trouble when Elliot twisted his knee in training during preparations for the Elgin match.

However, the Hearts doctor has told manager Jim Jefferies that the injury is not as bad as initially feared and the player was to be scanned today as a precaution.

"It's not the knee he had problems with before, it's the other one," explained Jefferies. "He caught his studs in the turf as he turned and we feared the worst. The doctor looked at it last night and it looks like it's not as bad as we feared. We thought it might have been his cartilage but the doc doesn't think so.

"We will scan it just to get it right but the doc doesn't think it's the cartilage. If that's right he'll have a chance for the weekend. It was a blow to us that Calum wasn't available last night because we would have played him with him being on fire right now. He's probably wishing he did play because he might have got a few goals as we were in such command."

Goals from Eggert Jonsson, Kevin Kyle, Arvydas Novikovas and Scott Robinson against Elgin secured Hearts' passage to the third round of the Co-operative Cup.
