Jonsson can be reliable replacement for Berra, says Hearts boss Laszlo

BARRY ANDERSON
CSABA LASZLO has identified Eggert Jonsson as a reliable short-term replacement for Christophe Berra should the club captain leave Hearts before the transfer window closes.
Tynecastle officials yesterday refused Wolverhampton Wanderers' £2 million offer for Berra and are determined to stand by their £3m valuation of the player.

Should an acceptable offer arrive before 5.00pm on Monday, when the window closes, Jonsson is the leading candidate to fill Berra's centre-back berth until a long-term replacement arrives.

Laszlo has utilised the Icelander's versatility to good effect this season, deploying him in midfield, central defence and in both full-back roles.

The player has responded with a series of assured performances, particularly while deputising at centre-back for the suspended Marius Zaliukas in recent matches.

Laszlo said today he will have no qualms in asking Jonsson to fill Berra's shoes should the Scotland defender leave Tynecastle in the coming days.

"I have had to make so many changes this season that we have a lot of players who can play in many positions. I am pleased about this," he said.

"We haven't tried Eggert in goal yet but I am sure if we put him there he would give a good performance.

"He has played some games at centre-back and I think he can play very well there again if we need him.

"I am not satisfied with players who can only play in one position. In the last five games we have had a different starting team.

"I know that if someone is injured or suspended, we have players on the bench who can play any time."

Wolves are currently reluctant to increase their offer for Berra, with chief executive Jez Moxey stating: "It is not news that we have had a long-standing interest in the player, but we will not discuss transfers until they happen."

Saulius Mikoliunas is expected back at Riccarton on Monday following a two-month absence due to knee ligament damage. He has been recuperating in his native Lithuania since sustaining the injury at Love Street last November.

"I am happy Miko will be back, he is a good player and we need every good player," continued Laszlo. "He can play right or left midfield and he can score goals, he is a dangerous player from midfield."
