Copil stays in Gorgie to see if five-year deal is honouredBARRY ANDERSON HEARTS teenager Dumitru Copil expects to wait until December to learn whether the club will grant him a new five-year contract, with his existing deal due to expire in January. A clause in Copil's current two-year agreement, signed in January 2007 when he joined Hearts from Romanian club Atletico Arad, stated that a five-year extension would be forthcoming upon his 18th birthday. The midfielder reached that milestone in March this year but put his Hearts career in jeopardy by going AWOL and returning to his homeland that month. He returned in June but must now wait until officials at Tynecastle decide on his future. Adrian Stefanescu, the player's agent, explained to the Evening News that he does not expect news from Hearts until the end of the year. "We are waiting for Hearts to contact us, I think it will be winter before there is news on the five-year contract. Probably December," he said. "There have been a lot of changes at the club so I think this is the reason. They have a new manager and staff. Dumitru has no problems now, he is okay and so it's down to Hearts." Stefanescu said the player had spoken with Hearts' manager Csaba Laszlo, who was born in Romania and speaks the language fluently. "He has spoken with the manager but this doesn't mean he will be put in the first team or anything," said Stefanescu. "It will help that the manager can speak Romanian if they offer him a new contract, but also Dumitru can speak English as well as anyone at the club now." Taken from the Scotsman |
