Hearts set to sign Hungarian keeper Balogh on loan

BARRY ANDERSON
HUNGARIAN international goalkeeper Janos Balogh has arrived in Edinburgh to join Hearts on a six-month loan from Debrecen, and manager Csaba Laszlo believes the 25-year-old could replace Steve Banks as the club's No.1.
Balogh is expected to become Laszlo's third summer signing alongside David Obua, the Ugandan midfielder, and Mike Tullberg, the Danish forward who yesterday completed a season-long loan from Italian club Reggina.

Banks currently performs a dual role as player/goalkeeping coach for Hearts, a situation Laszlo has been keen to resolve since his appointment at Tynecastle last month.

Balogh's arrival could see a changing of the guard with a loan agreement expected to be finalised this week.

"We will take him at first on loan for six months, then maybe after if he is happy we can talk about a transfer," Laszlo told the Evening News.

"We have been looking for a first-choice goalkeeper because Steve has been doing a great job but he is the goalkeeping coach, not the real goalkeeper.

"Jamie MacDonald is the No.2 but I am trying to build a young team. The players I bring must be not only young, they must have international experience. Balogh is a young goalkeeper and he has the experience. He played once for Hungary and he has experience of playing in Champions League qualifying rounds and the UEFA Cup. He is a two-time Hungarian champion and two-time Hungarian cup winner.

"We have searched for this for a long time in the market. If you don't have so much money you must search and now we have found some players who are young and hungry."

Meanwhile, Hearts have been drawn against Airdrie United in the second round of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup. The match will take place at Tynecastle on August 26-27.
