Romanov admits Hearts need more quality players

By BARRY ANDERSON
VLADIMIR ROMANOV has admitted an injection of quality players is now necessary at Hearts as he moved to reassure supporters by dismissing administration rumours as a "Hibs hope".
The majority shareholder is presently embroiled in recruiting a new manager but revealed that caretaker coach Stephen Frail's signing recommendations will be taken on board.

In a meeting with the Federation of Hearts Supporters' Clubs, Romanov blamed previous coaches for the extensive first-team squad at Tynecastle but agreed that some players are of insufficient quality to help Hearts challenge for domestic honours.

However, he was at his most bristling when questioned on rumours about the club going into administration. "I can categorically deny that this is not the case. It would appear to me that this is only a Hibs hope," said Romanov.

"The debt for the development of the main stand will be added to the club's existing debt, however, this should not be a concern to supporters as there will be no problem with us dealing with this situation. Trust us to deliver."

Romanov explained his identikit for a new manager to Federation secretary John Borthwick and vice-chairman Steve Kilgour.

He said: "We are looking for a manager with a good knowledge of British football, strong tactically and who can prepare and pick the strongest team. He will have full control over all team matters in terms of selection, tactics, transfer activity and discipline.

"Rotation systems can work when the rotated players are of the right quality, but I do understand the need for consistency."

Romanov was asked if he trusts advice from Frail on signing targets and gave a one-word reply of "yes". He then fielded a question on whether there was too much quantity and not enough quality within the squad.

"Agreed, but coaching staff in the past saw the situation as three players for each position to keep them fresh," said the Russian banker. "Youngsters are our future and I am really happy with the development of Christophe Berra, Calum Elliott and Lee Wallace. He (Wallace] learned so much from Fyssas. We need more Scottish young players in the team.

"Let's not be disappointed and let's not lose belief. We must be up nearer the top end of the table as soon as possible but there is no prediction as to where we will finish. We also have two cup competitions to try to win."

Romanov also dismissed Easter Road as a possible temporary venue for Hearts matches during the redevelopment of
Tynecastle. The club have asked supporters to consider the possibility of sharing with Hibs but the majority shareholder doesn't see that as being viable.

"Remaining at Tynecastle with three stands is an option, as is Murrayfield for a short period of time. Tynecastle would be like a building site and there would be health and safety issues, but Easter Road would not be an option."

Sporadic appearances at Tynecastle by both Romanov and his son Roman, the Hearts chairman, have irked fans for some time and the Federation made Romanov Snr aware of this during the meeting

"At the moment I need to concentrate on the appointment of a new manager as this is more important than me being there," countered Romanov. "I can still 'believe' even if I am not there so often.

"I take the point about Roman. At some stage, someone will be in his position but I do not see that person yet."
