Venus now heading south to join up with Mowbray

ROB ROBERTSON October 16 2006

Mark Venus, the assistant manager of Hibs, last night confirmed he would be linking up with Tony Mowbray at West Bromwich Albion and not be applying for the vacant job at Easter Road.

Venus, who admitted individual mistakes cost his side all three points against Hearts, insisted the time was not right for him to become a manager in his own right.
He paid tribute to the Hibs supporters and walked round the pitch to applaud them at the end of the game, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Intriguingly, he also said that he "could not see why" Mark Proctor, a member of the Easter Road backroom staff, should not be a leading candidate for the job as manager.
Proctor was appointed only a few months ago and is unknown to the majority of Hibs supporters who still see John Collins, working alongside a more experienced coach such as Tommy Craig, as the leading candidate for the job.

"I won't be applying for the manager's job, but can I just say thank you to the Hibs fans for the way they supported myself and Tony during our time at the club," said Venus. "At this stage of my career the job is probably not quite right for me.
"I don't see why Mark [Proctor] would not be a candidate as his cv is similar to Tony's at the same stage of his career and he is a good coach."
Venus, though, admitted he was sad he couldn't leave the club with a derby victory.
"The threat from Hearts during the game was manageable," he said. "We conceded two stoppable goals and that is disappointing.

"You look at the bigger games we have had and we have conceded too many slack goals. Maybe it is lack of experience, I don't know, but that is why we haven't won any silverware."
Rob Jones, the Hibs centre-back, dispensed with team loyalty and laid the blame for the loss of goals firmly at the door of his side's goalkeeper, Zbigniew Malkowski.
"I was a yard inside my own box when the ball came in for the first Hearts goal and the keeper should never come out there," said Jones. "He has tried his best but, for me, you let your centre-half get on with it as I had it under control.

"For the second goal it was a good strike but your keeper should get it at the near post, but there you go.
"I haven't spoken to the keeper as we get dressed a long way apart in the dressing room. There will be things said in the morning, but whatever we say changes nothing."
Valdas Ivanauskas, the Hearts manager, was pleased by his side's fightback from a two-goal deficit after having to play the last half hour with 10 men after Saulius Mikoliunas was sent-off.

It was the Lithuanian's third red card at Hearts and the club's seventh of the season.
"The draw was good after having a man sent-off," said Ivanauskas. "Saulius knew he had been booked earlier and was silly to get sent off. It was not clever by him."
Steven Pressley, the Hearts captain, decided to take a less accusatory approach then his Hibs counterpart, but admitted the side need to look closely at their disciplinary record.
"We are a physical team but not a dirty team," said Pressley. "Some of the cards we are getting is for questioning decisions and we have to show a bit of know-how at the correct times and show our experience.
"Saulius is just a young lad and is learning the game. You only learn by your mistakes and he worked hard for the team until the sending off."
