Thomson sure departure will not mean a step back

ROB ROBERTSON October 14 2006
Kevin Thomson, the Hibs captain, yesterday paid tribute to the football legacy left behind by Tony Mowbray at Easter Road as the hunt intensifies to identify his successor.
Pressure is now on the Hibs board to appoint a man with the same philosophy for free-flowing football. The new appointment will have to be made soon as the club have a string of vital games, starting with tomorrow's Edinburgh derby, to negotiate.
Cowdenbeath manager Mixu Paatelainen, Falkirk coach John Hughes and Ian McParland, the first team coach at Nottingham Forest, have all emerged as leading candidates for the position.
John Collins, the former Hibs, Celtic, Monaco and Scotland player is also in the frame. There are concerns that he has never managed a team before, but it is understood he would team up with a more experienced figure.
Tommy Craig, formerly a coach at Celtic, is an ideal candidate to assist Collins. He left Newcastle United this week after eight and a half years there as reserve coach. Both men could start straight away and no compensation would have to be paid.
The list of candidates will be occupying the mind of Rod Petrie, the club chairman, over the next few days but equally important to the fans is the much-anticipated derby.
Though Hearts have had the upper hand over Hibs in the league in recent times, they have not won at Easter Road for nearly four years.
Thomson is realistic enough to realise not having Mowbray in the dug-out tomorrow is a major handicap, but says the emotion of the occasion will be enough to get the Hibs players through the match.
"Of course it is a huge disappointment to see the gaffer leave, as many of us have improved as footballers during his time at the club," said Thomson. "He has been a huge influence on me. When he came in as manager, I was injured but he gave me time to get back, showed faith in me and made me captain which was a great honour.
"The way we played as a team under Bobby Williamson [the previous manager] to the way we play now has been night and day."
The fear for many Hibs fans is that young players such as Thomson, Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker could be Mowbray's first signings at West Bromwich Albion.
"I really don't see why anybody should be thinking of leaving Easter Road," said Thomson. "It is at times like this that players have to stick together and ensure we do well as a team.
"We play some very good football at Hibs and a lot of that is down to the way Tony wanted things to go on the park. Hopefully, the person who comes in will be able to progress the club further.
"Yes, Tony will be missed from the dressing room but we won't need much encouragement to get up for the game.
"Also, as any footballer will tell you, sometimes in big matches you hear your manager shout from the touchline and if you don't want to listen, you gesture that you cannot hear him for the noise of the crowd.
"As soon as the whistle blows on Sunday everything will be out of the window and the only thing that matters is what happens on the pitch. It is important we get a win to show the progression in the team."
Mark Venus will take the Hibs reins tomorrow but is expected to leave the club to join up with Mowbray at The Hawthorns immediately after the game.
"The best legacy of Tony is that he tied up a lot of the young boys here on decent contracts," said Venus.
"That can only benefit Hibs because they have them for the next two or three years and if someone wants to buy them then they are going to have to pay good money."
