Past encounters with the islandersSCOTLAND and the Faeroe Isles go head-to-head again in the European Championship qualifier at Celtic Park today. The Faeroese can, arguably, be described as Scotland’s bogey team after producing some shock results over the years. Here we look at Scotland’s record against the team from the North Atlantic. * Scotland 5 Faeroe Isles 1 John McGinlay, the Bolton Wanderers striker, opened the scoring after just four minutes before Scott Booth and John Collins made it 3-0 before half-time. Billy McKinlay scored a fourth before Collins struck his second of the night to send Scotland to the top of their Euro 96 qualifying group with a 100 per cent record after two games. Jan Muller, the Faeroes striker, earned himself a £100 bonus from the island nation’s FA with a 75th-minute consolation goal. Faeroe Isles 0 Scotland 2 Scotland could manage only two goals on their first visit to the Faeroe Isles but remained on course for Euro 96 qualification. Billy McKinlay and John McGinlay scored in the first half to give Craig Brown’s team a comfortable advantage. But the victory lifted the Scots two points clear of Greece and Finland in group eight. Scotland 2 Faeroe Isles 1 The Tartan Army were made to sweat for the final three minutes of the Euro 2000 qualifier at Aberdeen. Craig Burley and Billy Dodds appeared to have given the Scots a comfortable two-goal cushion at Pittodrie. But John Petersen scored from the penalty spot just four minutes from the end to ensure a nervy ending. Faeroe Isles 1 Scotland 1 Hans Hansen, the Faeroes defender, became synonymous with Scottish footballing disasters as he effectively ended hopes of automatic Euro 2000 qualification. The full-back headed home a late equaliser after Allan Johnston had given Scotland the lead six minutes before the break. But Hansen took advantage of slack marking to head home for the Faeroes in Toftir. However, the game was further marred for Craig Brown by the dismissal of Matt Elliott, the Leicester City defender, for lashing out at Todi Jonsson, the striker. Faeroe Isles 2 Scotland 2 Berti Vogts was left severely embarrassed in his first competitive game as Scotland manager. Scotland found themselves in serious trouble at two goals behind after 16 minutes after John Petersen struck twice. But the Scots fought back with goals from Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson. Scotland 3 Faeroe Isles 1 The Faeroes had looked set to stun Scotland again when Julian Johnsson headed home an equaliser to cancel out Neil McCann’s seventh-minute opener. But Paul Dickov made it 2-1 in first-half stoppage time to record his first senior international goal. James McFadden then stepped off the bench in the 59th minute before producing a simple finish 15 minutes later to secure the win. Taken from timesonline.co.uk |
