BIG GUNS WILL SHOOT EACH OTHER IN FOOTBy Gordon Waddell STEVEN PRESSLEY reckons Scotland can cause a Euro 2008 shock - because Group B's big guns will be too busy blowing each other's brains out. Walter Smith's men kick off their campaign on Saturday with a must-win Parkhead showdown against the Faroe Islands before a midweek crack away at Lithuania. But it's the group of death's heavy hitters - World Cup finalists Italy and France and last eight losers Ukraine - that have left the Tartan Army almost devoid of hope of hitting the finals. That, though, according to Elvis, is our BEST chance of getting there. He said: "The feelgood factor we ended the last campaign with in Slovenia is still there and we have a chance in our first two games to get our campaign off to a seriously good start. "We have spoken as a group and the one area we need to step up on is our home form. Some of our away performances have been extremely impressive but at home we must have more belief. Hopefully that will come in the games ahead. "People have spoken about the difficulty of our group and the teams we face. "But the one positive aspect is that all these teams are quite capable of beating each other. "You can get runaway group leaders but I don't believe that will be the case for us. Whether it's draws or home wins I think there is a GREAT opportunity for the bigger teams to drop points. "When you have big teams playing smaller teams they tend not to drop points in the same manner so there is scope for us to challenge. "It will be extremely hard but that's the one positive we must look at. We mustn't forget three draws is worth the same as one win, that's why it's important we win the key games, the ones we are expected to win. Do that and we could be there or thereabouts." Meanwhile, Elvis last night revealed he has been acting as Andy Webster's agony aunt for a YEAR as the Scotland stopper tormented himself over his future. The former Hearts star has been branded a traitor by angry Jambos for invoking a little known FIFA rule to escape the last year of his Tynecastle contract and end the five months of misery he's endured since talks on his future broke down. But skipper Elvis insists his pal was ready to see out another year if owner Vladimir Romanov hadn't frozen him out. Webster hasn't kicked a ball in 21 weeks since Graham Rix was forced to axe him because he wouldn't sign an extension to his deal. Andy's still waiting to make his Wigan debut but Elvis said: "It wasn't a decision he made overnight. It was a decision he'd spoken to me about for some time. He felt it was the right time to move on and progress Taken from the Sunday Mail |
