SPARTA PRAGUEFACTFILE UEFA CUP CRUNCH.. Neil Cameron PRAGUE can go one better than both Edinburgh and Glasgow - their football rivalry involves THREE major clubs Sparta have traditionally been the strongest, much to the dismay of those who follow Slavia Prague and Viktoria Zizkov. Formed in 1893, Sparta play in a compact 20,000 all-seater stadium. The name Sparta was inspired by the fighting spirit and courage of the people from that ancient city. They dominated football in Czechoslovakia and continued to dominate after the formation of the Czech Republic. In 1906, a committee member took an Arsenal jersey home from a trip to England and from then on Sparta adopted red (dark red or maroon, to be more precise) as their main playing colour. Prague is one of Europe's most popular destinations and the good news for Jambos fans is the beer is cheap. And nice! Taken from the Daily Record |
