Romanov ‘will not recruit players’ROB ROBERTSON July 25 2006 Vladimir Romanov, the Hearts owner, last night said he would not interfere in team affairs this season and claimed his club had a better chance of winning the league because the influence of players' agents at Tynecastle would be less. The Lithuanian boasted that the Edinburgh club could have a better ground than the Olympic stadium in Munich and that it could host Scotland internationals. Romanov also claimed that Scottish football had to change its style for the game to progress and that he expected more young players to be given their chance at Tynecastle this season as they adopted a more attacking style. He did admit, though, that the club were not yet ready for the Champions League and claimed their qualifier against Siroki Brijeg, of Bosnia had come a few weeks too soon. "A successful season for me will be seeing the management team working together," said Romanov. "I want them not only to use experienced players, but also use young players. This may be a risk, but that's what I'd like to see happen. I want to see young players in the team and for Hearts to have a unique style of football. "Scottish football needs to change its style for the game to progress. I don't think there will be much progress from Celtic or Rangers this season because they cannot change their style so quickly as they have a big history over their playing style. I think more and more young players will play more often for Hearts. I think we'll play at the same level of Rangers and Celtic.'' Romanov said the Tynecastle outfit had already made the alterations to their game and, as a consequence, would be more exciting to watch next season. "We've already changed the style of football at Hearts and our style is more attacking," he said. "The progress starts in the head. I guess other teams will now start to change their style of football, too. There will be no room for slow defenders any more because the style of Scottish football will become more and more attacking." Romanov's run-ins with Charlie Duddy, the agent for defender Andy Webster, and the problems he had with representatives of Rudi Skacel were well-documented last season. "We had chances to win the SPL last season but the influence of agents on some players undermined our chances," said Romanov on STV. "I think our team used only 50-60% of its capabilities last season. I think our players can perform a lot better this season because the negative influence of some agents to some players will not be there any more." Romanov felt Hearts needed more time to build the players' fitness ahead of their European encounter against Siroki Brijeg in the second qualifying round at Murrayfield tomorrow. "I don't think we are ready yet for the Champions League. We need time for the players to build their fitness and that's the job of Mr Eduard Malofeev [sporting director] to prepare the team for the Champions League. "I will not play a role in the recruitment of players, Ivanauskas and Malofeev will be responsible for that. I don't think we will purchase many players this season. I expect Malofeev and Ivanauskas to promote more young players from the academy to the first team." Meanwhile, Hearts hope that midfielder Julien Brellier, who damaged his hamstring against Osasuna last week, will return to training today as they assess his chances for the match against the Bosnians, for which the club have sold more than 20,000 tickets. Webster's future, meanwhile, remains uncertain with English Premiership outfit Wigan still waiting for an answer from him after talks last week. Duddy yesterday said that they were in negotiation with a number of clubs. Millwall are set to end winger Chris Hackett's Hearts nightmare by signing the player on a two-year deal, while it is believed Portuguese trialist Tiago Costa will not win a long term-deal at Tynecastle.
