Ivanauskas confirmed as Hearts look for stability

By Gary Jacob
HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN have appointed Valdas Ivanauskas as head coach on a permanent basis after a successful interim period in the role last season. The former SV Hamburg and Lithuania striker will be assisted by John McGlynn and the same coaching staff as last term will remain in place.

The Edinburgh club have also confirmed Eduard Malofeev, the former Dynamo Minsk, Kaunas, Soviet Union and Belarus coach, as sporting director.

Ivanauskas led Hearts to second place in the Bank of Scotland Premierleague and success in the Tennent’s Scottish Cup last season, but his appointment still comes as a surprise, with Alexei Mikhailichenko, the former Rangers player, hotly tipped for the job.

Speaking from Hearts’ training base in the South of France, Ivanauskas: “I never hid my desire to become the head coach and I am very pleased that this dream has been realised. We have a massive season ahead. We have some excellent players, and I am sure we will make good progress.”
