7 OTHER GREAT STUNNERSSCOTTISH CUP SENSATION CLYDE humiliated Celtic yesterday to create one of the biggest-ever Scottish Cup shocks. Here Record Sport looks at other results that have sent shockwaves through our game. 1967 BERWICK 1 RANGERS 0, first round - Rangers' defeat to the Wee Gers still stands at the pinnacle of Scottish Cup shocks. Sammy Reid scored the only goal of the game to leave the big guns rocked to the core. The Borderers also held the Ibrox side to a goalless draw at Shielfield Park in 2002. 1987 RANGERS 0 HAMILTON 1, third round - Graeme Souness had begun his rebuilding at Ibrox and the foundations were beginning to take shape when Premier Division basement club Hamilton arrived. But those foundations were shaken on January 31 1987 when a solitary goal by Adrian Sprott gave Accies victory. The Light Blues still went on to win the league while the Lanarkshire club were relegated. 1995 STENHOUSEMUIR 2 ABERDEEN 0, fourth round - The tie looked unlikely to provide any kind of shock. But the all-ticket crowd of 3800 at Ochilview Park saw Tommy Steele score twice for the Warriors to earn a quarter-final clash with Hibs. 1997 CELTIC 0 FALKIRK 1, semi-final replay - Falkirk looked to have blown their best chance of securing a shock over Celtic in the 1-1 draw in the first game where Kevin James cancelled out a Tommy Johnson strike. But in the rematch 11 days later, Bairns striker Paul McGrillen scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute to send the First Division side through to the final against Kilmarnock. 2000 CELTIC 1 INVERNESS CALEY THISTLE 3, third round - Celtic head coach John Barnes was already feeling the heat in his first season at the club - but nothing was to prepare him for the visit of Inverness in February. Mark Burchill swiftly snuffed out Barry Wilson's opener for the Highland club, but a Lubomir Moravcik own goal past Jonathan Gould gave Caley a half-time lead. After a dressing-row involving Mark Viduka and assistant boss Eric Black, Paul Sheerin completed the scoring - and ultimately ended Barnes' Hoops career - from the penalty spot. 2003 FALKIRK 4 HEARTS 0, third round - The First Division leaders simply tore Hearts apart, with Bairns striker Collin Samuel claiming a hat-trick within the opening 31 minutes and veteran Owen Coyle grabbing another to leave the Jambos shell-shocked. 2003 INVERNESS 1 CELTIC 0, quarter-final - Nobody expected lightning to strike twice on Celtic. Dennis Wyness did the damage with the only goal of the game. Taken from the Daily Record |
