Romanov backs Rix's search for new facesPaul Kiddie HEARTS boss Graham Rix today insisted he has the full support of owner Vladimir Romanov as he bids to strengthen his title-chasing squad. The Lithuanian millionaire has made recruiting new faces a priority after watching the Jambos turn in a dismal display in going down to Rangers at the weekend. The inept Ibrox performance has forced Rix to redouble his efforts to bolster the team, who have slipped four points behind Celtic at the top of the SPL, and he has revealed good progress is being made with the opening of the transfer window just 12 days away. The club have already been linked with Liverpool midfielder Darren Potter, FC Teplice right-back Josef Kaufman and Moldovan international stopper Yuri Priganiuc. Rix today refused to be drawn on the identities of the players he wants to bring to Tynecastle, although revealed that progress continues to be made. "I have been speaking to both Vladimir and Roman Romanov, they have been very supportive, and we are looking at a few players," he said. "I can't say who they are for obvious reasons but we are working hard on it. "It is not long now until the transfer window opens in January and we have to be ready to make a move when the time is right." The Lithuanian millionaire has also been utilising his vast scouting network in recent weeks as he scours the Continent for signing targets he feels would be useful additions to the first-team squad. In constant dialogue with Rix on the current recruitment drive, the Baltic businessman will splash the cash for the right personnel. "Our defeat by Rangers on Saturday was a clear sign that we need to strengthen the team," said Romanov, who has made it clear he has no intentions of selling inspirational midfielder Paul Hartley. His son, chairman Roman, released a statement yesterday blasting newspaper speculation that Scotland star Hartley was poised to leave the club next month and Rix today stressed the free-scoring midfielder is an integral part of his plans. "Paul is a great footballer and a key man for the team," he said. "Every manager will tell you that every player has their price but I like Paul as a player and a person. He is an important part of our team at the moment and will be in the future." Rix has also restated his belief that he will turn around Hearts' poor form since his arrival. "I have confidence in my own ability. As I have said the Romanovs have been very supportive and we are all working hard to get through this. And we will." Romanov senior, meanwhile, will delist Hearts from the London Stock Exchange at the close of business on January 19. The move was a formality after he acquired more than 75 per cent of the company. The original share offer which saw Romanov purchase 80.01 per cent of the club by December 2 was kept open for a further 14 days and on closing saw the Lithuanian control 81.68 per cent of the company. Romanov has said his ultimate target was the 90 per-cent mark which would have triggered a compulsory buy-out of the remaining shares. Taken from the Scotsman |
