McGlynn completes first signing

PAUL KIDDIE

HEARTS caretaker boss John McGlynn has made his first signing in the wake of George Burley's departure by recruiting Jim Stewart as the Jambos' new goalkeeping coach.

With Malcolm Webster having followed Burley out the Tynecastle door - his services were dispensed with on Monday - McGlynn moved quickly to fill the void by appointing Stewart, the former Rangers star making a welcome return to the Gorgie outfit having worked under Jim Jefferies and Billy Brown.

Scotland goalkeeping coach Stewart reported for his first day of duty at the club's Riccarton academy yesterday as he once again linked up with Craig Gordon.

"We had to bring in a new goalkeeping coach after Malcolm Webster left," said McGlynn.

"Jim Stewart has worked here before and also works with Craig Gordon at international level so I thought it would be a good idea to keep that going. They know each other's strengths and I'm happy he's back. First and foremost he is a good coach but he is also a really good guy."

In a curious twist of fate, Stewart's first game in his new role will be against his previous club Kilmarnock this evening, financial problems at Rugby Park having forced him to leave the Ayrshire outfit.
