Robson drops hint over Hearts job

Sir Bobby Robson
Burley in shock exit from Hearts
Sir Bobby Robson has hinted he could be interested in the vacant manager's job at Hearts following the departure of George Burley on Saturday.

Robson, 72, reportedly turned down the position in the summer but says he got on well with owner Vladimir Romanov.

"I didn't take the Hearts job before for personal reasons but my circumstances are different now," he is quoted as saying in the Mail on Sunday.

"It's an attractive job and I left Mr Romanov on good terms."

I think Robson would be a good choice, he's the type of manager the players would want to play for

Robson will be in Edinburgh this week to attend the funeral of his friend and former Fulham and England team-mate Johnny Haynes.

Burley, who led Hearts to the top of the Scottish Premier League after an unbeaten start to the season, was only in charge for 113 days.

And, like Robson, Burley made his name as a manager while in charge of Ipswich.

However, at Hearts he reportedly had an uneasy relationship with Romanov, the Lithuanian banker and the club's major shareholder, who launched a bid for a complete takeover on Friday.

"Irreconcilable differences" was the reason given for Burley's shock departure before Saturday's 2-0 win over Dunfermline.

Burley was expecting to part company with Hearts, according to his nephew Craig, the former Scotland and Celtic midfielder.

He told the Sunday Mail: "George was not happy with the interference as he has always been his own man.

"George realised the axe was going to come down on him. I am just astonished by the timing of his departure - it is inexplicable.

"He will not be short of offers. Clubs were queueing up for him when he left Derby and they will be even keener now."

It is a massive job and Sir Bobby Robson could be a possibility
John McGlynn,
Hearts caretaker manager

But John McGlynn, Hearts caretaker boss and Burley's former assistant, dismissed suggestions that Romanov had a say in team selection and suggested Robson could be a potential replacement.

"As far as I was concerned, George Burley was bringing the players in - the majority of them anyway," McGlynn told BBC Radio Five Live.

"A lot of the time Mr Romanov is back in Lithuania and comes over to watch games at random. Sometimes he is here and sometimes he is not.

"It would be a good job but whether the job is for me at this time I am not totally sure.

"They are talking about a coach to take Hearts football club into the Champions League next year and I think they are talking about a top coach.

"It's a massive job and Sir Bobby Robson was interested before when the parties spoke and they were very impressed with him. He could be a possibility."
